How to Get Rid of No-See-Ums Naturally

If you’ve ever spent time near the coast, marshes, lakes, or wooded areas, you’ve probably encountered no-see-ums. These tiny biting insects can be even more frustrating than mosquitoes because they’re so small they’re often difficult to spot until they’ve already bitten you.

I became very familiar with no-see-ums after moving to St. George Island, Florida. While renovating our home and spending more time outdoors, I found myself constantly battling these tiny pests. Traditional bug sprays worked to varying degrees, but I wasn’t thrilled about covering myself with chemicals every time I wanted to walk the dog, work outside, or enjoy an evening on the porch.

That frustration led me to begin experimenting with natural ingredients. Over the course of nearly two years, I tested different combinations and eventually developed the bug repellent balm that became the foundation of SGI Naturals.

Why Are No-See-Ums So Difficult?

Unlike mosquitoes, no-see-ums are extremely small and can often slip through ordinary screens. They tend to be most active during the early morning and evening hours, especially in warm, humid environments.

Many people describe their bites as itchy, irritating, and surprisingly persistent. On St. George Island, they are often just a fact of life, especially during certain seasons.

Natural Ways to Reduce No-See-Um Bites

People use a variety of strategies to make outdoor time more enjoyable:

  • Wearing long sleeves and lightweight pants

  • Avoiding peak activity times when possible

  • Using fans on porches and patios

  • Eliminating standing water around the home

  • Applying natural bug repellents before outdoor activities

While no single solution is perfect, many people find that combining several approaches provides the best results.

Why I Chose a Balm Instead of a Spray

During my testing, I wanted something that stayed where I applied it and was pleasant to use. I ultimately settled on a balm made with grass-fed beef tallow, beeswax, and lavender oil.

The result is a product that’s easy to carry, easy to apply, and designed for people who spend time outdoors gardening, fishing, boating, hiking, or simply enjoying their backyard.
