Best Bug Repellent for No-See-Ums

People often ask me what the best bug repellent is for no-see-ums. My answer is simple: the one you’ll actually use.

When we lived on St. George Island, our vacation rental turned over almost every week. One thing we noticed was that guests constantly left bug spray behind. We eventually had an entire laundry basket filled with partially used bottles from every brand imaginable.

That told me something.

People were buying bug repellents, but they weren’t necessarily enjoying using them.

For me, the biggest complaint wasn’t even the smell. It was the way many sprays felt on my skin. After applying them, I always felt sticky, uncomfortable, and ready to take a shower as soon as I got back inside.

Life on St. George Island

If you’ve spent time on the Gulf Coast, you know the bugs can be relentless.

No-see-ums were the biggest problem throughout most of the year. During other seasons we also dealt with yellow flies, horse flies, and mosquitoes that seemed big enough to carry you away after heavy tropical rains.

The worst times were usually early morning and evening when the air was calm.

There were days when I couldn’t comfortably walk my dog without constantly swatting at my face, neck, arms, and legs. I’d find myself doing what I jokingly called the “bug dance” while trying to get down the street.

I didn’t need perfection.

I just wanted something that worked well enough that I could enjoy being outdoors again.

Why I Started Making My Own

My original goal wasn’t to start a business.

I simply wanted relief.

Over nearly two years, I experimented with different ingredients and formulas. One of the biggest surprises was discovering how well grass-fed beef tallow worked as a skin moisturizer.

The challenge was making it feel better on the skin.

By adding beeswax and a touch of lavender oil, the balm became easier to apply and much more pleasant to use. The result was a product that I actually looked forward to carrying with me instead of avoiding.

Real-World Testing

One of my neighbors, Mike, walked his black Labrador every day.

He wore long sleeves, long pants, boots, and a wide-brimmed hat with neck protection. Even with all that coverage, the bugs still seemed to find his ears, wrists, and other exposed areas.

Meanwhile, I was usually walking around in shorts, flip-flops, and a T-shirt.

Eventually I gave Mike and his wife a few sample tins to try.

They loved them.

That was one of the first times I realized this wasn’t just solving my problem.

It might help other people too.

How I Use the Balm

I don’t slather it on.

I simply dab a little on the back of my neck, around my face, on my arms, ankles, and feet before heading outside.

If the balm is cool, I warm it slightly with my fingertips first.

A little goes a long way.

For me, the goal has always been simple: enjoy a walk, work in the yard, sit on the porch, or spend time outdoors without constantly thinking about bugs.

My Personal Opinion

I’ve spent most of my life being the person bugs find first.

If there’s one person in a group who gets bitten, it’s usually me.

That’s why finding something that worked for me was such a big deal.

The best bug repellent for no-see-ums isn’t necessarily the strongest chemical on the shelf.

It’s the product you’ll actually use consistently because it feels good on your skin and helps you enjoy being outside again.
