Why I Chose Grass-Fed Beef Tallow

Most people are surprised when they hear that beef tallow is one of the primary ingredients in the SGI Naturals bug repellent balm.

The truth is that the formula didn’t start with bug repellency at all.

It started with skincare.

The First Experiments

While looking for natural alternatives to conventional products, I began experimenting with whipped beef tallow as a skin moisturizer.

The results were surprisingly good.

The tallow felt nourishing and protected skin from drying out in the Florida sun and salt air.

The downside was that pure tallow wasn’t perfect.

It could feel a little greasy and lacked the finished feel I wanted.

Improving the Formula

The breakthrough came when I started combining cosmetic-grade grass-fed beef tallow with small amounts of beeswax and lavender oil.

The beeswax improved texture and consistency.

The lavender added a pleasant scent and helped create a product that felt cleaner and more refined.

Together they transformed the balm into something I genuinely enjoyed using.

Why Grass-Fed Tallow?

I wanted simple ingredients that people could recognize.

Grass-fed beef tallow has been used in soaps, balms, and skincare products for generations.

Rather than relying on a long list of synthetic ingredients, I preferred a shorter ingredient list built around familiar materials.

From Personal Use to SGI Naturals

What began as a personal experiment eventually became part of my everyday routine.

Friends and neighbors started asking for tins.

Visitors staying in our vacation rentals began trying it.

Before long, a product I originally created for myself became the foundation of SGI Naturals.

Today, every tin still reflects that original goal: create something simple, effective, and pleasant enough that people actually enjoy using it
