Why a Balm Works Better Than Bug Spray
When I first started trying to solve my bug problem on St. George Island, I assumed the answer would be another spray. Like most people, I had a collection of aerosol cans, pump sprays, and lotions sitting around the house.
The problem wasn’t that they never worked. The problem was that I hated using them.
After applying most bug sprays, my skin felt coated. Working outside became uncomfortable. Walking the dog became uncomfortable. By the time I finished whatever I was doing outdoors, I was ready to go home and wash everything off.
I began experimenting with different approaches and eventually settled on a balm.
Why I Preferred a Balm
A balm stays where you put it.
Instead of spraying a cloud into the air or covering large areas of skin, I could simply apply a small amount to the areas that mattered most:
-
Ankles
-
Wrists
-
Arms
-
Neck
-
Face
-
Behind the ears
A little went a surprisingly long way.
Easier to Carry
One unexpected advantage was convenience.
A small tin fits easily into a pocket, tackle box, golf cart, beach bag, backpack, or glove compartment.
There is no risk of leaking spray bottles, clogged nozzles, or airline restrictions.
Comfortable for Everyday Use
My goal was never to create the strongest bug repellent in the world.
My goal was to create something I would actually use every day.
The balm became part of my routine before walking the dog, working outdoors, gardening, or sitting on the porch in the evening.
Because it was comfortable to use, I found myself reaching for it far more often than traditional sprays.
The SGI Naturals Approach
Years of living with Florida’s biting insects taught me that consistency matters.
A product that is pleasant to use often gets used more frequently than one people avoid until conditions become unbearable.
That philosophy ultimately became the foundation of SGI Naturals.
